You are Invited to our 20th Birthday Party!

We've talked about it for months, and now it's less than a month away- our 20th birthday bash!

The party is Saturday, August 1.  The city commission granted our request to close 8th Street in front of The Sandbar- between Massachusetts and New Hampshire streets- beginning at 5 pm. The show starts at 8 pm.

Mark Valentine and the Number Ones will perform a live concert featuring our favorite jukebox and parade float songs. We'll also have dancing showgirls, mystery guests, and the KU Bar Band, which started at The Sandbar.  And, our favorite pirate will host the entire event!

We are working on a photo slide show of memories from the past 20 years. If you have pictures to contribute, please email them to us at sandbar(at)thesandbar(dot)com.  The slideshow will be played inside the bar and also projected onto a giant screen outside for everyone to see.

This event is free and open to the public. It's a family friendly event- we know many of our friends, staff, and customers have kids and you're welcome to bring them! No alcohol will be allowed in the street, but we will extend our patio area with a special beer garden just for the evening.  Bottled water, soda, and food will be available for purchase.

You're encouraged to dress up as a Parrothead, your favorite sea creature, or in your favorite costume from one of our parade floats.

Please also support our neighbors, who were all excited and supportive of this event:
Eighth Street Tap Room
Richard's Music Company
Henry's on Eighth
Sunflower Outdoor and Bike
Central National Bank
Teller's
Static Hair Salon
The Mirth
Magic Carpet Traveler

We are excited about this celebration and hope you can join us!

If you're on Facebook, you can RSVP to the event. Pass it on to your friends!

Updated Information 7/27/09

The street party is free and open to the public.

There will be a $5 cover charge to enter The Sandbar and/or the beer garden in front of the bar. You must be 21 to enter these areas. You'll get a wristband which will allow you to re-enter the bar/beer garden without having to pay again.

Please be kind to our door staff so they don't get stressed out! We want them to have fun too!

All About the Birthday Festivities

We are finally fully recovered from the big event of Dave turning 40.

2009apr10_dave's birthday_0001 His actual birthday was yesterday, but as you know the big party was on Friday. And it was a good one!  We celebrated at The Bottleneck, a live music venue just up the street from The Sandbar. As much as we would have loved to party at The Sandbar….that occupancy limit of 49 was a problem.

If you're looking for a fun party place, by the way, The Bottleneck is awesome. Even though there was a live show planned for the evening, the staff was fine with us bringing in food and decorations. Of course, we also brought in about 75 people who wouldn't ordinarily have been there for a bluegrass concert and who like to drink and who know how to tip the bartenders. And who stayed until 2 a.m.

Peach brought in snacks from the Sandbar Sub Shop in Ottawa- mini sandwiches, Patty's Killer Dip, and cheese and crackers. If you haven't been there yet, you should go.

2009apr10_dave's birthday_0042We pretty much hung out in the front area of the bar, with the pool tables and dartboard. Lots of friends  came and went the whole night and everyone had a great time. Dave's parents and sister even traveled from McPherson- it's not every day that your son turns 40. They brought along a photo album full of all of Dave's most embarrassing childhood pictures- the wrecked cars, the white tuxedos, the mullet/perm hairstyle.

One of the funniest gifts of the night was courtesy of Brett, the official Papa John's pizza delivery guy of The Sandbar. He and his coworkers created some shaped breadsticks that spelled out "Happy 40th Dave" and Brett delivered them in a pizza box. Very creative idea.

Dave had originally planned to work his regular shift on Saturday night at the bar, but decided to take his whole birthday weekend off. Good thing, too, as he wasn't feeling too hot on Saturday.

Pictures from the night are posted to our Flickr photostream. Join our Flickr group and upload your own Sandbar pictures!

Dave’s Birthday is Almost Here

If you haven't heard the news yet, our fearless leader Dave will celebrate a pretty big birthday next weekend.

He will officially be "over the hill" next Sunday when he celebrates the big 4-0.

As much as we'd love to have a big birthday celebration at The Sandbar…it's simply not big enough! But don't worry, there will still be a party.

We're moving the party a little to the north this time. This is an open invitation to all of Dave's friends, fans, family, and whoever else wants to join us at The Bottleneck next Friday night, April 10. The Bottleneck is located at 737 New Hampshire, about a half block from The Sandbar.

The Bottleneck is still open for business that night and they are hosting four bands: DeWayn Brothers, Moreland & Arbuckle, Deadman Flats, and Old Country Death Band.  Ticket prices are not listed on the website, but staff thinks the tickets will cost around $8. The shows will start at 9 p.m., but we will be there around 7 p.m. Join us for pool, foosball, darts, and snacks.

If you're on Facebook, you can RSVP to the event and see who else is coming. Feel free to bring friends! Let's pack the Bottleneck and enjoy some great music and Dave's birthday!

Happy Birthday To Me…

So the blog has been a little quiet lately, for two reasons.

Number one, I’ve been a little desperate for stories. I keep trying to talk people into writing guest blogs for me, but apparently my arm-twisting needs some work. Or else I need to start coughing up some cash or drinks or something.

Number two, Saturday was my birthday! And we’ve been a little busy preparing for the big event, which included the public unveiling of our new yard and fancy deck.

The Sandbar, in fact, was quite slow on Saturday. Since most of our social circle tends to revolve around people from the bar, both staff and customers, a lot of the regular evening crowd was at our house instead of buying drinks at the bar. Blair, Tegan, and Andrew took one for the team and volunteered to work. They missed most of the party fun.

One of my favorite moments of the night? When a police officer friend stopped by, in uniform, on his way to work. Tierney saw him walk up and yelled out “hey, we aren’t at capacity!,” apparently not understanding that he was there as a friend. And also not understanding that he is a police officer, and not the fire marshal, and therefore he didn’t care about the occupancy of our yard or the multiple strands of lights and extension cords that decorated the area.

Cinco de Birthday

Tomorrow is May 5th, more popularly known as Cinco de Mayo.

Last year, we called it Cinco de Marriage, in honor of the Maynard wedding cruise. This year, we discovered that it’s also a birthday- and not once but twice.

Bartenders Chris and Tegan both celebrate their birthdays tomorrow. Chris is tending bar during the late shift. We’re hoping that his customers tip him dollars instead of birthday shots. Tegan isn’t scheduled to work but she’ll likely be in the bar at some point during the evening.

Come on by and celebrate with us. We’ll have Mexican beers on special for $3, and Chris will probably have a special surprise in store for you too; although they probably won’t be dressed in their tacky Christmas finery.
