Calling all Land Sharks! The Sandbar turns 22 this year, and you're invited to our third annual birthday block party!
Here's the basic details:
- Saturday, August 13
- 8th and New Hampshire
- Street will close at 1 p.m. for setup, the party will start around 5 p.m.
Help us celebrate with live music, food vendors and a beer garden! This is a family-friendly event and we encourage you to bring the kids out for the evening. Alcohol will be restricted to the beer garden area.
This year's birthday party will have a shark theme. Landshark beer will be featured, we'll have a new shark-themed photo opportunity and we've rented a giant shark slide!
(picture from the McDonald's of Lawrence Facebook page)
You might remember last year when the McDonald's on 23rd St. reopened after a quick remodel. They set up this giant shark slide in the car dealership's parking lot next door. Of course Dave and I checked it out and decided we needed it for our party.
We'll have the slide for a couple of hours the night of the party.
More information will be available soon, like a specific timeline of events for the party along with the names of the three bands who will perform.
A few other tidbits:
- If you're on Twitter, use the hashtag #sandbar22 to tweet about the party
- If you're on Facebook, tag the Sandbar in your post about the party
- RSVP for the party on our Facebook page and share it with your friends
- Upload your party pics to our Facebook page, tweet them to us or email them to us at sandbar@thesandbar.com
We can't wait to see you at the party!

At Friday night's Tour of Lawrence street party, we had another nice surprise: a visit from mid-90's regular customer Gina, who now lives far, far away in Seattle!
And, it's her birthday today!
The last time we remember seeing Gina in the bar is back in 2002, right after the hurricane debuted. Lots of things have changed since then, but she still looks as young as ever!
And look- she still poses the same way for the camera! (Above, Gina circa 2002 and last night.)
Gina and her family are in the area for an extended visit, and of course they had to stop in Lawrence for dinner at Free State Brewery and an evening at the Sandbar.
Once Dave found out it was her birthday at midnight, he ordered a special hurricane and they danced on the bar in mermaid costumes.
Happy, happy birthday Gina! It was so great to see you and Michael last night, and we hope you can make it back for a visit again soon.
A few more pictures are posted on our Facebook page.

The Sandbar was full of parrotheads last night!
Kansas City-area Jimmy Buffett fans and members of the Parrothead Club converged on the Sandbar for their monthly "phlocking." They were decked out in vintage Buffett concert shirts, crazy hats, beads and all sorts of other attire that you don't normally see outside of a Buffett concert tailgate.
Tropical drinks were flowing and Jimmy Buffett tunes were constant. Two of the club members even got to be honorary mermaids during an early hurricane.
The parrotheads weren't the only ones in the bar, though. Early in the evening, a group celebrating a birthday showed up in bright neon outfits. It looked like an '80s theme party of some sort. A couple of the girls were even wearing neon tutus. They danced around the bar for awhile and did a 7-person shotski, and then moved on to the next place.
It was a fun night at the Sandbar, especially if you like Jimmy Buffett tunes!

Here's a guest blog from long-time bartender Heather, works the Friday 5-9 shift. Last Friday was Heather's first shift back after several days off, and it happened to be Friday the 13th. Welcome back, Heather!
Friday the 13th, another Friday night down at The Sandbar- or so I thought walking in the door. That was before five bar crawls, a bachelorette party and a birthday celebration made their way through our doors. Yes, that’s right: five bar crawls in just four hours.
One group of bar crawlers got out the super long shotski, one group sang their sorority song, there were matching T-shirts, Dirty Banana shots, Shark Attacks, Bahama Mamas, broken glassware, yelling, hugging, and photo-taking. One group had a guy calling out the remaining time in the bar, which, having been on a bar crawl or two, I thought was awesome.
Most of our patrons were quite patient with the ruckus and, in fact, seemed amused by all of it. In addition to all of the festivities we had old friends, new friends, a just-turned-21-year-old and his family, a cute little guy in his stroller, a soon-to-be-married couple out on a date, a potential romance blooming and, of course, some KU Grads.
Personally, I think the ghost may have even been in attendance as well. We have a handy step stool for those of us who aren't Dave’s height. I was getting down from pulling a couple of T-shirts and missed the bottom step. Instead of crashing to the floor I just kind of… landed. Okay, so it isn’t that far to the ground, but I am a klutz of the highest order. Which was unfortunate for Phil on this particular night as I did actually stomp on his foot once or twice.
At the end of it all I can’t help but think that Jimmy Buffet could probably turn this particular night into one heck of a song!
The night was so full of entertainment that we'll have several more guest blogs from Heather about the evening. Stay tuned!

Last night, the Lawrence Police Department conducted bar checks around town. What does this mean? Basically, police officers go to bars, walk around and ask to see customers' identification. They're checking for fake ID's and no ID's.
A young lady was sitting at the bar celebrating her 21st birthday. She was having fun with the birthday attention, and Dave was entertained. He decided to have a little fun.
He caught the officer's attention, and slyly asked him to card the birthday girl.
The officer walked over to the girl and asked for her ID.
Officer: It's not her birthday!
Dave: What?!?
Apparently, her birthday was actually Wednesday and she was celebrating on Friday instead. Or, more likely, in addition. She stumbled around a bit explaining to Dave that she wasn't intentionally lying about her birthday.
At least the officer didn't say "She's not 21!"

Our 21st birthday party is a fond memory, and we still love the T-shirt design that Hasty Awards in Ottawa created to commemorate the fun.
But we're looking ahead to our next big birthday, and we're ready to say goodbye to the leftover T-shirts.
So, we're having a clearance sale. Birthday shirts are on sale for only $8. People, that's a steal.
Sizes are limited- we have a few smalls, a lot of mediums and even more larges. That's it. And when they're gone, they're gone forever.
Side note: these make great gifts for that friend who might be turning 21 soon…
