Live Radio Broadcast on Saturday!

The KU basketball team takes on Ohio State this Saturday in yet another huge game this season. We're excited for a unique opportunity at the bar before the game- a live radio broadcast!

Ryan Lencl is the host of the Angle of Pursuit, a sports talk radio show that airs on ESPN AM 970 WFUN from 4-6 p.m. on Tuesdays. The show is out of Ashtabula, Ohio, and is also streamed live online.

Ryan contacted us about doing a live broadcast at the bar before the game, and since we're generally up for just about anything, we said sure! It's their first time in Kansas and we're glad to welcome them.

The broadcast will start around 11:30 a.m. on Saturday (time has been changed from the previous announcement due to the time zone difference), and tip-off is at 2:15 p.m. You can see a short commercial for the show on our Facebook page. (I couldn't figure out how to pull it off and embed it here, sorry for my lack of technical skills.)

We'll have pizza available for fans who come by for the broadcast. And Dave might make an appearance on the show, so be sure to tune in!

Check out the Angle of Pursuit's Facebook page here.

Sandbar Shirt on a CD

We've got lots of pictures of Sandbar shirts in all kinds of fun places, like tropical islands and mountaintops and foreign countries, but this might be a first.

We recently spotted one of our shirts on the inside cover of a music CD!

One of Dave's favorite bands, Jason Boland and the Stragglers, travels through the Lawrence and Kansas City a few times a year, and he tries to make it to every show. Once upon a time, he gave Roger, the band's pedal steel/guitar player, a Sandbar shirt. We've been pleasantly surprised to see it make a public appearance a few times.

The band recently released a new CD, and Dave downloaded it from iTunes. Then, one of our Facebook fans (thanks Brandon!) posted a picture and a comment on our Facebook page letting us know that Roger is wearing his Sandbar shirt on a photo inside the CD's cover!

Like any good fan, Dave then went out and bought not one, but two copies of the CD. Unless you know our shirts, you wouldn't be able to tell it's a Sandbar shirt…but we definitely recognize it.

The Stragglers will be in Lawrence this Thursday, Dec. 1, at the Granada. If you like good Americana/red dirt/Texas country music, check them out. And stop by the Sandbar before the show for a pre-party; we like to think we've become the unofficial pre-party spot for these type of shows.

Sandbar Shades on Channel 6

Our friend and customer Andrew is a sports reporter for local Channel 6, and he likes to use his Sandbar toys as props for entertainment on the air.

This time, we got a heads up via Twitter, so we were able to grab our camera in time and snap a picture of the TV screen:

Our fun rainbow shades made their appearance on Useless Fieldhouse Trivia.

According to Andrew, he also rocked a mustache on a later broadcast. We haven't had a chance to watch that episode yet, but if it's on our DVR we'll take a picture.

We love that Lawrence and Channel 6 are fun enough to do things like this!

Sandbar and the Dear Lawrence Photo Project

The Lawrence Journal-World recently featured a cool photo project they called "Dear Lawrence," based on the Dear Photograph site. The objective is to take a picture of a picture from the past in the present. Confused? So were we, until we saw examples.

We searched through our photo archives, which are pretty limited prior to around 2003 when we started using digital cameras, and we finally found a couple of pictures of our building from the 90's. They aren't very old pictures, but our building looked significantly different back then- many of you may only know us as the lime green building with a giant tiki head, but it wasn't always that way.

Here's our first submission:

Remember the white building? And the giant green palm trees that adorned our old windows? Back then our windows didn't open, and we didn't have a patio.

We used another picture from our wall to create our second Dear Lawrence photo:

This picture is fun for us because it features Sandbar people in it. The picture is from St. Patrick's Day 1997, when we built an "Under the Sea" themed float.

Pictured are Cheryl, a former Sandbar-tender and one of the only girls to ever work the door (read her memories of the Sandbar here); Peach, our esteemed founder; Betsy, Ted's daughter; and finally little Andrew, who tends bar today.

And yes, that's a zebra. Peach and Ted own zebras on their farm outside Baldwin, and Peach walked the zebra in the parade behind our float.

We actually profiled the St. Patrick's Day/zebra picture as part of our "Off the Wall" series, where we share the stories behind the stuff on our walls. Read about it here.

You can see the entire Dear Lawrence photo gallery here.

Fun with the Sandbar Shark Cutout

Our new shark photo opportunity has been a big hit! We've received several pictures of customers posing in the cutout. Here's a few for your viewing pleasure:

So much fun! Don't forget, we're having a contest with these pictures: submit a picture with the shark cutout to us, and you could win a Sandbar T-shirt! You can email them (sandbar@thesandbar.com) or tweet them to us (@thesandbar). We also love to see them on our Facebook page, but because of Facebook's contest rules, you'll also need to submit it by email or tweet in order to enter.

On Sunday, we'll pick a random winner.

Shark Week Photo Contest

We love sharks, so naturally Shark Week is a lot of fun for us. Although, as others have said, "every week is Shark Week if you do it right," and we think we're doing it right.

We recently unveiled a brand-new photo cutout with a shark on it, so we thought we'd have a little contest.

Here's the deal:

  • Take your picture with our shark cutout
  • Tweet it to us (@thesandbar) or email it to us (sandbar@thesandbar.com)
  • Next Sunday, we'll pick a random winner to get a Sandbar T-shirt

You can upload your picture to our Facebook page if you want- and we'd love for you to!- but entries that are only uploaded to Facebook won't count in the contest. Facebook has funky rules about contests and instead of trying to figure out their (very complex) rules, we're using methods that are easier for us. So, if you put it on our Facebook page, make sure you also email it to us.

So, tweet or email us a picture of your pretty face in our shark cutout, and you could win a T-shirt! In fact, we've already got one entry, and she didn't even know we were having a contest when she posted her picture. Thanks Barbara, and good luck!

*By submitting your picture to us, you give us permission to post it on our website, blog or other social media sites. If you don't want your picture on the internet, don't send it to us.
