Here's a piece of exciting news for Jimmy Buffett fans: Peter Mayer, the guitarist for the Coral Reefer Band, is live in concert this Sunday in Lawrence!
You may not know that Peter Mayer has his own band, the Peter Mayer Group. They've actually performed small concerts at the Sandbar three times over the years, and they've always been a huge hit. (And sold out quickly.) He doesn't play Buffett tunes, though- he has plenty of his own songs that range from jazz, country, classical and gospel. It's good stuff.
This Sunday, the Peter Mayer Group is performing a benefit concert at Abe & Jake's. All of the ticket sale proceeds will go to eleven African countries for malaria treatment, prevention and education.

- Time: 7:30 p.m.
- Where: Abe & Jakes, Downtown Lawrence
- Cost: $20 online or $25 at the door
There's a VIP ticket option available for $100, and it includes a reception at 6 p.m. with appetizers, drinks, an auction and special seating for the concert.

For the third year in a row, the Sandbar is sponsoring a Rocky Horror Picture Show party bus!
Peach and Ted, co-owners of the bar, also own the Crystal Plaza movie theater in Ottawa. We meet at the Sandbar, load up a bus and head south on a haunted bus trip through the countryside. After a brief stop at the beautiful Dunn's Landing for a Halloween party, the bus arrives at the movie theater for an exclusive showing of Rocky Horror Picture Show, complete with props!
Details:
- Friday, October 28
- Cost is $25 per person, must pre-pay and register
- Bus leaves the Sandbar at 7:30 p.m. sharp
- Bus returns to Sandbar after the movie
- Cost includes bus ride, movie ticket and props

There's a sign-up sheet at the bar. You must pre-pay and register. The first sign-up sheet is limited to 25 people and then we have a wait list. If there's enough demand on the wait list, we'll look into renting a second bus.
It's easiest for our staff if you go to the bar to make your reservation; if you call, they'll have to call you back in order to run your credit card over the phone since we only have one phone line. Or, you can pay via Paypal at sandbar@thesandbar.com.
We're excited about this annual tradition and can't wait to see everyone's costumes!

Last night's inaugural Girls' Night Downtown shopping extravaganza and fundraiser was a big success!
Girls' Night Downtown featured discounts at over 25 participating downtown merchants for ladies (and men!) who bought a $20 shopping pass. All proceeds from the shopping pass benefit Mario's Closet at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. We don't know the total amount raised yet, but based on the number of pink bags we saw last night, it has to be a good amount!
We were excited to be one of the five after-party locations. Shoppers dropped their passes into pink boxes at each of the after-party spots to be entered into a grand prize drawing- and the prize was amazing! Participating merchants all donated gift certificates ranging from $20 to $200 (and maybe even more than that!), and the winner got a pink wallet stuffed with over $1900 worth of gift certificates.
Dave had another treat for the shoppers and bar-hoppers last night:
All of the participating businesses had pink wigs to designate their status. Dave cleverly attached our pink wig to the photo cut-out. And of course, he couldn't resist an opportunity to take a picture himself!
We also gave away free pint glasses to anyone who showed their shopping pass to the bartender.
Thanks to all the wonderful businesses downtown who participated in this great event, to Downtown Lawrence Inc. and Lawrence Memorial Hospital Endowment Association for dreaming up such a fun idea and to all the shoppers who flocked downtown last night! Hope you had a great time!

The bar frequently gets public relations pitches, ranging from concerts (we don't have room for that), pay-per-view television events and an assortment of other random things.
But last month, we got one that topped them all: a bikini bull riding and female oil wrestling tour. Um, no thanks.
I wasn't going to post their actual release, but decided it was too funny to not share- even if it's giving them additional publicity.
So, here it is, in most of its glory. I should note, this was one of the longest emails we've ever received, so I cut some of it out. That's right, there was more. But all misspelled words, bad punctuation and other mistakes are all theirs, not mine (it was extremely difficult for me to post this unedited, given that editing is a part of my day job.) Enjoy.

Once again the Sandbar sponsored a team at the Spurling Scramble, the sixth annual golf tournament put on by the Lawrence Police Officers Association, Fraternal Order of Police and International Association of Firefighters. This year's event was held last Thursday at Alvamar.
Proceeds from the event benefit a family or organization in need.
Team Sandbar consisted of staffers Tegan, Joe, Nathan and Tyler. Dave dragged himself out of bed early to be there at 7:30 a.m. with thermoses full of hot chocolate and bottles of Buttershots. He didn't golf, but he happily handed out shots and hung out with Karen and Kalissa.
According to the golfers, the "Factor" was in full effect that day. If you don't know what that means, you need to spend more time at the Sandbar.
