Tricks and Treats

Well, another Sandbar Halloween party has come and gone, and I think we've recovered very well. There were plenty of tricks and treats this year…

The biggest trick of the night was successfully pulled off by bartender Coleen. Every year she talks non-stop about Halloween, and like several other friends she starts planning her next costume on November 1, but this year she was suspiciously quiet.

She showed up after ten o'clock dressed as Beth from Dog the Bounty Hunter, with Dog in tow. I think this picture is appropriate enough for the blog, hopefully she won't yell at me:

The pair of them won the costume contest- yes, we remembered to hold it this year! Second place went to the Hamburgler. Neither Dave nor I can remember who won third place- anyone else remember?

Now for the treats.  Since it was Halloween we all forgot about the Bar Band, but they still play on holidays. They stopped by for their regular pre-game festivities, and most of them were dressed in costume.

There were so many great costumes this year! The whole bunch from the Wizard of Oz, a KU wizard, a Twister game, a detective from CSI, Rainbow Brite.  The Orbit gum girl made an appearance, and we had bikers, a sexy (scary?) Abe Lincoln, and even Jesus. He was on vacation, though, and you could tell by his Hawaiian shirt.

Here are a few pictures of some of our staff, along with some of our favorite costumes of the night:

Check out our Halloween photo album for more pictures of the fun. And don't forget to upload your own Sandbar Halloween pictures to our Flickr group!

Happy Halloween!

All of us at The Sandbar wish all of our friends and fans a happy Halloween!

Whether you join us in Lawrence or Ottawa, take the little ones trick-or-treating, or find something else fun to do, enjoy and be safe.

The party starts around 8 p.m. at both locations. Lots of tricks and maybe some treats will be in store, but get there early!

If you happen to celebrate at The Sandbar, we'd love to see your pictures. You can email them to us or upload them directly to our Flickr group to share with everyone. Or, if you're on Facebook or MySpace, you can tag The Sandbar to share the pictures with us.

And if you're out celebrating, remember to designate a sober driver, call a friend, or call a cab.

Halloween Countdown!

Halloween is only two days away!

If you know The Sandbar at all, you know how much we all love Halloween. We'll find any excuse to dress in costume, and on Halloween you don't need an excuse, you just do it!

Most years, we get to have multiple celebrations because the holiday doesn't fall on a weekend night. The lot of people will still get dressed up and go out on October 31 even if it's a weeknight, but the rest of us save it for whichever weekend night is closest. And the die-hard fans dress up and go out both nights.

Last year, the pre-Halloween party got started late because of a late night KU football game. The actual holiday fell on a Wednesday, but it was just as much fun. Dave was super excited to have two costumes last year.

We usually advertise a costume contest; and we usually forget to actually have the contest. Last year was no exception, so the contest was held online for a few days afterward. You can see the winner here. I think she stacked the vote. And by stacked, I mean….well, never mind.

Back to this year. Dave swears we will have a costume contest at midnight. If there is, we'll dig up some kind of a prize. There could be treats at the door, so be sure to trick-or-treat the doorguy when you arrive.

As for drinks, domestic draws are $3, jello-fish shots and Dirty Banana shots are $2.

If you're planning to be in Ottawa for Halloween, they'll be giving away $500 worth of cash prizes with winners every hour. It might be worth the drive.

Best Costume

Announcing the winner of the 2007 Sandbar Halloween costume contest, with 44.4% of the overall vote…

Dolly Parton!

Congratulations to Ashley for her fine portrayal of the chesty singer and also for her ability to rake in the votes. She must have a lot of fans. We have a prize for our winner: a newly-designed Sandbar shirt that just arrived a few days ago.   Stay tuned for a picture of the new shirt.

Halloween Party Number Two

Another Halloween, over.

Even though the ‘official’ day fell on a Wednesday this year, lots of people still managed to dig out their costumes (some for a second or even third time already this year) and make it out to the bar for a fun night. Any excuse to go out, right?

Some of the highlights from our second party:

  • Baywatch.  Chris as David Hasselhoff and Blair as Pamela Anderson.  That sight alone was worth a trip to The Sandbar. White sunblock, lifeguard suits, and wigs- it was downright scary.
  • Mr. Peepers. Joe played the goofy ‘missing link’ character from Saturday Night live.
  • Brokeback Mountain.  Dave managed to convince Emerson to be his cowboy partner for the night as they outfitted themselves in western shirts courtesy of Goodwill, cowboy hats, and stick horses.

Dscf0574_2 There were so many great costumes this year.  I’ve created a new poll so you all can vote on the best one.  Because, wouldn’t you know it, we forgot to do the costume contest again. Apparently everyone was too busy watching/participating in the antics of the evening.  So, we’ll just do it here.  Then you can have a vote even if you weren’t at The Sandbar {or even in the same state}.  There will actually be a prize for the winner! Most likely a Sandbar shirt or hat or koozie or something like that. Nothing fancy. And if you disagree with the costumes I chose for the contest, well, too bad. You can leave me a comment and let me know who you think should have been included.  Maybe a write-in candidate will win, who knows.

Don’t forget to vote, over to the right. And still more pictures added to the Halloween album

Happy Halloween!

If you’re not wearing a Halloween costume right now, shame on you. No candy for you.

Join us tonight at The Sandbar for our {second} Halloween party.  This time we’ll try to remember to have a costume contest.  And I believe that Dave will be wearing a new costume tonight.

More photos have been added to the Halloween album, courtesy of Brother Pants (or is it now Sister Pants? Or maybe even Mother Pants, if he’s the boss of the other nuns?) and his lovely wife, aka Ms. Spears.  Check it out.
