I hope everyone made it home safely last night and is recuperating today.

Our first Halloween party of the season was last night. Because KU’s football game was so inconveniently scheduled for 6 p.m., along with the fact that the team is actually winning this year and people wanted to see it, The Sandbar was completely dead until after the game was over. Some of us who didn’t get there until about 10 p.m. were worried about having to stand outside in line for hours- which would be normal for a Saturday night- but instead we were surprised to find only about twenty people in the bar when we arrived.
But that didn’t matter. The crowd who was there managed to make their own fun even without the place being packed.
Some of the highlights:
- Britney Spears. Michelle imitated the fallen pop princess perfectly, right down to the is-it-a-shirt/is-it-a-dress outfit, which flashed her private parts (not her real ones!) for the paparazzi. Add to that a pink wig, unfortunate poufy lips, and large white sunglasses, and one thought the starlet might have actually graced Lawrence with her presence.
- A Bachelorette. This might not seem unique, as The Sandbar sees bachelorettes nearly every weekend. The funny thing about this costume, however, is that it was Chad dressed as a bachelorette, complete with the suck-for-a-buck t-shirts that the jealous girlfriends always bestow on the bride-to-be, a tiara, and the requisite male anatomical parts.
- Dolly Parton. The only way this costume could have been any better is if Ashley could have figured out how to shrink herself down by a couple of feet. The crowning piece of this costume was the bigger-than-life brassiere stuffed to the size of a person’s head. Blonde curls, a mole, and a Dollywood shirt completed the ensemble, along with an aching back from the weight of the chest.

And what would Halloween be without Dave and his latest creation. Most of the costume was tame- dark
denim farmer overalls, plain flannel shirt, and fake hay attached to the sleeves and collar to resemble a scarecrow. But then he donned a giant plastic jack-o-lantern. He cut a hole in the bottom and rigged a bicycle helmet on the inside so he could wear the headpiece. It was especially funny when he rode his scooter up and down Massachusetts Street- multiple times- wearing the entire ensemble.
I’ve added some pictures to the Halloween album. More to come when I get pictures from other folks as well as pictures from the "real" Halloween party on Wednesday. So, if you were there and took any pictures, send them our way.

Every year we talk about all the fun things we could do for Halloween. Like a pumpkin-carving contest- that idea has been floated every year for the last two or three. Sandbar staff and friends could gather one evening at the bar with pumpkins and be artistic. It hasn’t happened yet. As much as we look forward to Halloween every year, somehow it still kind of sneaks up on us.
We’re pretty much doing the same thing as always. Saturday night- the 27th- you can expect the bar to be full of crazy costumes. We’ll have a costume contest at some point, but we never really adhere to a strict schedule. The contest just kind of happens whenever the ringmaster of the circus (that would be Dave) feels like it, usually when the bar is crowded and there is a decent mix of costumes.
We’ll do the same thing on Wednesday night for those of you who like to celebrate the holiday on the actual holiday (and those of you who just like multiple reasons to go out in costume).
As for prizes, most likely the winners will get Sandbar gear like shirts, hats, or koozies. We don’t usually do a cash prize, simply because there are already so many contests happening around town with bigger prizes.
What will Dave do this year? Even I’m not really sure. Last year his outrageous costumes made for a great poll question. Unfortunately (for all of us) it seems that his "Hammer" costume was the hands-down favorite. Apparently all of you readers like to see Dave at his most embarrassing.
You can go here for a recap of last year’s Halloween party. And don’t forget about the Halloween photo album on the right side of the page. It has pictures of great costumes from the last several years. We’ll be adding more pictures of this year’s fun after it happens.

Congratulations to the costume contest winners, the KISS groupies!!
A member of the band was on hand as well. And, thanks to Antje and her ever-present camera, I have added even more pictures to the Halloween photo album on the sidebar. Enjoy!

Boy, you folks really liked Dave as "The Hammer." What is it about this costume that you like so much? Is it the wig? Is it the pose he struck in the picture? Or, God forbid, is it the fact that he’s actually in his underwear of all things?
Some of you reading this may have been around that Halloween night. Dave and I trick-or-treated my former co-worker that night, because she really wanted to see his costume. He really did start out with black athletic shorts on, but they didn’t have quite the effect of a wrestling leotard. So, nothing like your husband dropping his pants on a front porch on Kentucky Street. After that we met up with a group of friends at The Sandbar- Slash, Medusa, and Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz among others. We all had a few drinks and headed over to G Willikers, the restaurant that used to be located in part of the Salon di Marco building. Once more, the shorts were dropped in favor of the underwear. He even crossed Massachusetts Street in just the underwear.
Honestly, it wasn’t blatantly obvious that he was wearing underwear as a costume. Sure they were short, but he did cover up the waistband with duct tape. But of course…everyone knew. Mostly because it was so funny, we couldn’t stop talking about it.
What was the best Halloween costume you saw this year? What do you think Dave should do next year? Leave us a comment and give your two cents.

Check this picture out… some of our Halloween visitors on Saturday night. Yet another man who was willing to dress up as a woman- Paris Hilton- and his wife as her trusty sidekick Nicole Richie. Yes, they’ve reconciled, according to the tabloids! I have to admit, this Nicole costume was very creative….

One down, one to go.
We find any excuse to celebrate. Most of the time Halloween falls on a weekday, and a lot of folks don’t like to go out on weeknights. When this happens, The Sandbar celebrates Halloween on the nearest Saturday, as well as on October 31.
Last night was quite a party. People got there early, and they stayed late. There was a line at the door almost all night. About half the customers were dressed in costume. Dave and Blair, the late shift bartenders, dressed as Devo- the 80’s group that’s famous for "Whip It." A last minute trip to Walmart gathered all the necessities- black turtlenecks to cut the sleeves out of; black pants to cut off for shorts; and glittery iron-on letters. Dave made the red hats himself out of pink construction styrofoam. Three dollar glasses from Cottin’s completed their stylish look.
Ken, Matt, Aña, and Brooke came as the TV show "Deal or No Deal"- Ken was Howie Mandel and the other three were beautiful blonde models. Matt even wore heels all night, unlike all the other men in the bar who were dressed as women- like Chad, who stuffed his French Maid costume with kitchen towels.
We had a flasher; McDreamy from Grey’s Anatomy and some other doctor types; a chicken strip; a saloon girl; Joe Dirt; a secret service agent; a German barmaid, and Cruella deVil. Mr. Clean and Julius Caesar even made appearances. A photo album with some of our pictures has been added to the sidebar. We’ll be adding more pictures after our second Halloween on Tuesday.
Come on back Tuesday night for some more tricks and treats. We’ll have more Bacardi and Captain Morgan promotions and giveaways, and it’s $1.50 anything with a three dollar cover at the door.
