Way back in 2001, Peach came up with the crazy idea for an indoor hurricane. Who would have thought that nine years later, we'd be working on our seventh video and still blowing napkins around the bar every night?
Many of you probably weren't around in 2001 when the first video debuted. Lucky for you, we still have a copy of it. Unlucky for those of you with motion sickness issues, we only have a copy on DVD that we couldn't figure out how to convert and upload to YouTube. Instead, we played it on our TV and recorded the screen with a Kodak zi8. Yeah, we're professional.
The original video was filmed and edited by some random guy that Peach found. It featured anchorman Dave; hurricane expert Patrick; man on the street Pat; and mayor (for real) Marty. And Knobbie from the Wheel makes a cameo appearance; see if you can find him.
Be sure to watch for the VH-1 style pop-up videos with fun facts.
We originally planned for the large fish tank to be part of the show- a storm was supposed to take place in the tank, but we couldn't ever get it to work right. Anyone remember that?
Oh, and the song! Our original hurricane song was set to the tune of Copa Cabana and sung by Peach and our friend Showtime.
Here it is, in all its ridiculous glory:
Leave us a comment and let us know if you remember this video, or if it's new to you, what you think.
Our hurricane video contest is underway! Submissions are accepted until August 7. The contest is sponsored by the Sandbar Sub Shop.
Film your best advice about "What Not To Do During A Hurricane," upload it to YouTube, and send us a link. We'll post it here, and then starting August 7, the public will vote for the finalists.
On August 14- the day of our 21st birthday party- we'll announce the finalists, and you'll get to vote for the winner. The winning video will be included in our 2010 hurricane video, and the creator will win free Sandbar Subs sandwiches for a year!
Our first two entries came all the way from Asia, proving that anyone can enter this contest using the power of the internet- no matter where you are. Margarita Monday proponent Amerika submitted these videos.
The next entry is a social-media themed entry from Raymond, who saw us tweet about the contest on Twitter.
Think you can do better? Film something and submit it to us.
We've got several videos of the staff and friends clowning around with ducks and surfboards that we'll post soon. If we can figure out our new video software, that is.
We're very excited to announce a brand new summer contest!
As you know, it's been a long time since we've had a new hurricane video. The current video was filmed over Labor Day weekend of 2007, and it was unveiled on New Year's Eve that year. It's almost three years old!
This time, for our fifth installment of the video, we want to involve YOU. We want you, the fans, to create your own video clip about "What Not To Do During a Hurricane." You've seen those segments on our previous videos- they're always funny and we think you can create some great ones.
It doesn't have to be a fancy professional recording. Use your Flip, your phone, or your camera. Just keep it to less than ten seconds, please!
Here are the rules:
Create your video featuring "What Not To Do During a Hurricane" in less than ten seconds
Upload it to YouTube and tag it with "sbhurricane"
Submissions are accepted through August 7. Be sure to follow all of the rules above to be considered!
Starting August 7, the public will vote on their favorite video clips. We'll select some finalists based on the votes. We'll announce the finalists at our block party on August 14, and you'll have one night to vote for your favorite clip.
The winning video clip will be featured in our new hurricane video! The winner will also receive a prize package featuring free sandwiches for a year from our sponsor, the Sandbar Sub Shop, which opens this month in Lawrence.
Be creative! We can't wait to see what you come up with.
Back in 2001, Peach decided that The Sandbar needed some kind of an "attraction." She thought that Disneyworld would be the perfect inspiration, so Dave and I, along with Peach and her son Andrew, flew to Orlando to experience all things Disney.
Since The Sandbar is a beach bar, a hurricane attraction seemed natural. And it would be the perfect foil to the typical Kansas storm- tornadoes. Dave got busy figuring out how to put together an indoor storm and voila! The Sandbar Hurricane was born.
It premiered in February of 2002 to a crowded bar. We went all out for the premiere- a limo took the "stars" of the show for a drive around town and to The Wheel for cocktails before dropping everyone off at The Sandbar. The red carpet was rolled out and the stars were announced to the waiting crowd.
The hurricane proved to be a success, and we’ve now had three or four different newscasts. We’ve also recorded our very own Sandbar song that is now used as the hurricane dance. Each time we have a new video, another world premiere takes place. We’re working on some ideas for a new video- it’s about that time.
