Happy Birthday, Kansas!

Our great state turns 149 years young today! Kansas became a state on this day way back in 1861. (And the coolest university in the country was created four years later, to borrow a line from KU Info.)

One of our Twitter followers wondered aloud if we would have any drinks in honor of Kansas Day. To be honest, this had not yet occurred to us, but we love any reason to celebrate- so yes, we will!

All day today, you can enjoy a Sunflower Shandy for $3.50. It's Boulevard Wheat and lemonade. And yes, we realize that Boulevard is actually made in the state that sits directly east of Kansas, but pretend it's made somewhere else for today. Focus instead on the fact that Kansas usually leads the nation in wheat production.

And looking ahead…

Is it ironic that the big in-state rivalry basketball game is the day after Kansas' birthday?

I know we aren't really a sports bar and don't have huge, fill-the-whole-wall sized TV's, but if you're looking for a place to watch the game tomorrow, stop by our Lawrence or Ottawa location. Both places will have free chili dogs during the game!

National Champions!

Dave and I are safely back from San Antonio, and he’s so dedicated to The Sandbar that he went to work tonight a mere three hours after we got home. He misses the bar when he’s gone for more than oh, about twelve hours.

The chance to watch the Final Four games in person was truly an amazing experience, and it was even better when KU won it all on Monday night. Dave always says that the best games are the ones you barely win. Of course the worst games are the ones you barely lose. Monday’s game was one of the best games we’ve ever seen and it was awesome to be there. The place went absolutely nuts when Mario Chalmers’ three-pointer sent the game to overtime.

As much fun as it was to be in San Antonio for the game, we wished we could be in two places at once. We got constant updates from the Sandbar staff while we were gone, and it sounds like Lawrence was definitely a fun place to be both Saturday and Monday.

Peach: "People are crawling in and out of the windows! It’s insane!"

Jen was kind enough to send me some pictures from Saturday night’s party at the bar:

If you have pictures from the mayhem that you’d like to share, email them to us and we’ll put them on our website.

Game On!

Just in case you’ve been living under a rock the past week, KU takes on North Carolina tonight in the Final Four.

The Sandbar will open at 1 pm like we do every Saturday, with Coleen behind the bar. In anticipation of heavier than normal traffic today, we’re adding Ron at the door.

Like we have throughout the tournament we’ll have free hot dogs. There will also be a $5 cover charge. Compared to what we are hearing around town, this is a steal.

All of us at The Sandbar encourage you to party it up tonight and have a great time watching KU win, but please be responsible.

On a side note, we didn’t find a Sandbar in Austin last night, but we did see some great live music on the University of Texas campus, found a cool bar in Sixth Street, and met some Canadians, some UCLA fans, and a 2002 KU grad.

More bar research today when we hit San Antonio.

Be safe!

One Big Party

Last night might have been our biggest Sunday night ever.

KU played Davidson in the NCAA Midwest Regional Final. A small crowd watched the game at The Sandbar- smaller than I expected, since the deeper into the tournament KU gets, the more people come out to watch. And since The Sandbar isn't one of those places where you have to be lined up before opening time to get a table, we usually get a lot of the overflow crowd from the sports bars. Not this time, but it's probably just as well.

After the nerve-racking, nail-biting win, the town exploded. Downtown became the magnet for everyone, the center of everything. People poured out of the bars and restaurants downtown. We wandered among the crowd- in the rain- for awhile and then headed back to the bar.

Even though we weren't crowded for the game, we sure got busy afterwards. The bar was packed for hours and part of the bar band made an appearance.

What a fun night. Hopefully, we'll have two more of those: next Saturday, and next Monday.
