Bartender Nic in the News

Our Man on the Street Pat may have finally lost his throne. Bartender Nic appeared on the LJW's "On the Street" section yesterday. Apparently he was cornered while pumping gas.

If you haven't met Nic, come by on a Monday night. He's behind the bar from 5-9 on Margarita Monday.

The question:

"When you and your partner travel, who does the driving?"

Nic's answer (which may or may not get him in trouble with said partner):

“I do, all the time. She doesn’t like to drive. I don’t want
her driving.”

My question:

Does he not want her driving because she's a poor driver? Or because he's worried for her safety? Or is it because she doesn't like to drive, so he wants to make her happy?

I don't have an answer to that question. Ask him if you see him.

Dave and the Downtown Lawrence Inc. Board

It seems like every time a member of the Sandbar family is in the news, another one or two follow right along.

Dave is starting his third year as a member of the Downtown Lawrence Board of Directors. The LJW had a little blurb about the new additions to the board, as well as the continuing members.

If you have ideas, suggestions, complaints, or whatever about Downtown Lawrence, feel free to send them his way. He can at least take your thoughts to the board.

It doesn't seem like it was January of 2008 when Dave started this foray into board membership. It's been an interesting two years for him, learning about the inner workings of an organization and getting up at the crack of dawn the morning after he's worked all night in order to make a 7:30 a.m. meeting. At least they're only once a month.

However, as I look back at the original post announcing his election to the board, I think we can all agree that he really hasn't changed that much.

Former Sandbar-tender Scotty and Brainville Trivia

Longtime Sandbar regular and once-upon-a-time bartender Scotty Mac was in the news yesterday, along with his lovely wife Jen. Read the LJW article, Trivial Matters: Live Games at Lawrence Bars, Restaurants Gain Momentum.

Scott created a quiz show game at Kaspar's Bar & Grill way back in 1999 with Peach's brother, Tom, who later bought the place and renamed it Conroy's Pub. (The article refers to him as "the godfather of Lawrence's trivia scene- I sense a new nickname.)

These days, Scott and Jen host Brainville Trivia at both Johnny's locations in Lawrence. On the second and fourth Wednesday of every month, they're at the original Johnny's, north of the river. Game starts at 7 p.m.

On the first and third Tuesday of the month, they host Brainville at Johnny's West, the new location out at 6th and Wakarusa. Game time is 8 p.m.

There's no limit on team size at either game, and they are free! Winners receive $25 cash.

If you love trivia and want to try out a live action game instead of Buzztime that we have available all the time, check out Brainville with Scotty & Jen! You might see some Sandbar folks in the crowd, too.

Congrats to Scott & Jen on a great article and publicity!

Exciting News About the Sandbar Sub Shop!

Peach and Ted opened a modified version of The Sandbar one year ago in downtown Ottawa- the Sandbar Sub Shop. It has all of the kitsch and charm of The Sandbar- and lots of our own wall decor- but serves up healthy sub sandwiches and salads instead of Bahama Mamas.

The Sandbar Sub Shop turns one year old this month, and if that's not exciting enough, there's also a new location!

Here's a great article from the Ottawa Herald that talks about Peach's recent franchise of the Sub Shop to our friend Scott, from Zarco66.

Scott owns eight convenience stores & gas stations throughout the area, and he's created the first Zarco66 Oasis at his location at 2518 East Logan Street in Ottawa. He started remodeling it three months ago, and now it includes a Scooter's Coffeehouse, liquor store, and a Sandbar Sub Shop.

The article talks about some of the cool things Scott wants to do with his shops; he's already been an innovator by having one of the first gas stations in the state with renewable gas blends.

We're excited about the Sandbar Sub Shop's anniversary and also our new partnership with Scott and Zarco66! Next time you're in Ottawa, be sure to stop by and check it out. And maybe he'll have a Zarco66 Oasis in Lawrence very soon!

Engaged: Heather & Ken

If you're around The Sandbar very much, or if you keep up with our blog, then you know Friday bartender Heather got engaged last spring. The wedding plans are moving along and the future married couple is enjoying pre-wedded bliss.

Heather & Ken's engagement announcement hit the LJW this weekend. A lovely photo of the pair accompanied the announcement.

You'll have to scroll down the page to see the announcement, because it's grouped on a page with all the other brides-and-grooms-to-be.

We like that Heather included her bartending gig as part of the announcement!

Sandbar Sub Shop in KC Fitness Magazine

I cannot BELIEVE I forgot to post this.

The Sandbar Sub Shop was featured in the October/November issue of Kansas City Fitness Magazine. Peach gave me a copy, I scanned the page, and promptly forgot all about it.

I have no idea how the magazine found our little sub shop, but it's a cool article. And very bright and Sandbar-like, which makes us happy. It even features pictures of a few of our sandwiches and salads!

Check it out:

If you haven't been to the Sandbar Sub Shop yet, you need to go. It's located in downtown Ottawa, Kansas, at 127 South Main Street. The menu has a great selection of healthy subs, salads, and smoothies.

And of course, there's lots of Sandbar decor!
