Our resident jack-of-all-trades and fearless leader Dave fancied up the women's bathroom this week.
He's been wanting to fix it up for awhile and make it prettier for the ladies. Recently he found some wood flooring to replace the old worn-out tile, and on a trip to the Habitat for Humanity ReStore with Joe Factor, he scored a lovely blue sink. It kind of matches the blue tile floor in the rest of the bar. The best part about the sink, though, is it's one of those all-in-one sink and countertop type things, so there isn't a separate sink set into the countertop.
Check it out:

Obviously, he's not quite finished yet, so try to ignore the weird holes in the wall and under the sink. Doesn't it look so much more Sandbar-ish now?
Though, I hope the new decor doesn't inspire the ladies to stay in the bathroom even longer than they already do. And I hope the boys are jealous.

There are lots of things on the Sandbar walls that are reminiscent of Key West. Some of them have been highlighted here already (like this picture); others are yet to come.

This particular photo has hung on the walls of The Sandbar for many years now. It’s from a Spring Break trip to Key West that some once-upon-a-time regulars took; they posed for the requisite picture at the Southernmost Point, autographed it, framed it up, and donated it to their favorite bar back home.
I don’t know any of their names, except for Chris, who was a skinny blond guy who used to hang out at the bar back when I first started going there. The girl in the photo briefly worked the early Monday shift at one point.
This was also back in the pre-Pants era when things weren’t framed quite as lovingly as they are now. Back then, we used any old piece of wood we could find. Nevertheless, it’s fun to remember some of the regulars from years past, and give them something to look forward to seeing should they ever make it back to The Sandbar.

Several years ago, we started receiving these little wooden plaque type things left at the door. They are all painted and sealed, and have funny little handwritten quotes on them. Apparently some guy in Lawrence creates them for lots of different businesses and drops them off at random; none of us have ever seen this man so we have no idea who he is. I have, however, seen his creations in other stores around town.
By now we have probably accumulated at least 50 of these trinkets. Many of them have been sent to Ottawa; some of them are on our walls; and still others are lost somewhere in the upstairs room that Dave likes to call an office.
I’d like to share some of these creations with the internet today. After all, they shouldn’t be hidden away for only us to enjoy.
There are so many more of these around but these are some of the more recent arrivals.
Where else around Lawrence have you seen these? We could create a treasure hunt to look for them.

A group Sandbar Thursday night regulars graduated a few years ago and presented us with a gift:

For two years, between 2003 and 2005, this group of six friends (Nicki, Johnna, Clint, Jenn, Erin, and Lindsey) drank Bahama Mamas and collected beads. They gave The Sandbar a wooden oar, decorated with a bunch of their beads and a credit-card-inspired poem.
Bahama Mamas: $2.00
Drunken Nights: Countless
Time Spent at The Sandbar: Priceless!
The oar now occupies a spot high up on our wall. Unfortunately, we’ve had to discipline other bar patrons for trying to steal beads from the oar, especially on Mardi Gras. It’s not cool to steal things from our walls, people.

Earlier in the month, I showed you the latest shirt added to our lineup of classy Sandbar attire and explained how Dave modified a design he found "somewhere" to create this one.
Well, on graduation Sunday, Dave and Andrew were relaxing before the debauchery of Blair and Chris' graduation party invaded their day. As they walked down Massachusetts Street, past the kitschy Beyond the Door– a store that sells a little bit of everything, but especially funky signs- they noticed this:

Look familiar? Yep, it's a sign with the original graphic that inspired the shirt. Of course Dave had to buy it. It now hangs in a place of honor above the bar, right beside the shirt it spawned.
If you haven't been to Beyond the Door, you should check it out. I'm quite fond of the vintage looking metal signs they sell, especially the ones with clever and sarcastic phrases.

Since I didn’t give them public recognition of their anniversary last week, this edition of getting to know what’s on the Sandbar wall features souvenirs from Brooke and Maynard’s wedding last year in Mexico.
Cinco de Mayo, 2007. Playa del Carmen. The wedding of Brooke and Maynard. After the wedding, Dave found a sombrero at a stand on the street that he wanted, badly. The seller wanted $30 for the sombrero. Dave tried to bargain with him but he wouldn’t budge, so Dave wisely walked away.
Our friends, however, could tell just how desperate he was to own that sombrero, so they pooled their money and went back and bought it. It promptly became a trip souvenir. Everyone in the group signed it with an orange Sharpie, and Dave vowed that it would hang in The Sandbar upon our return as a permanent reminder of the trip.
Brooke ordered an enormous print of the wedding party standing on the beach to go along with the display, and Brother Pants framed it up all pretty.
