Congratulations Curtis!

A long-time friend of ours (and occasional Halloween bartender many years ago) was honored with a prestigious award at the University of Kansas!

Curtis Marsh was presented with the Citation for Leadership and Achievement in Student services, or C.L.A.S.S. Award, during last Saturday's home basketball game. The award is presented by the Board of Class Officers, a student organization, to an unclassified staff member in the Student Success division. This division at the University houses many student services like housing, admissions, and financial aid. Members of the student body submitted nominations, and a BOCO committee selected five finalists and conducted interviews.

Curtis has worked at KU for over 15 years, but since 2005 he's been the director of one of the most popular and well-known programs on campus: KU Info! We've all used that service one time or another, whether for a serious question or something silly.

We're so excited that students at KU recognized Curtis with this award. He's one of the most passionate KU fans we know, and he is the perfect person to represent not only KU Info, but the entire University.

Congratulations Curtis, all of us at The Sandbar are proud of you!

Read the University of Kansas press release for more details about Curtis, KU Info, and some awesome quotes about him.

Land Shark Spotted in Baldwin City

Peach brought us a copy of the Baldwin City Signal- it featured a picture of one of our Sandbar friends!

Check out this snow sculpture (and try to ignore the horribly crooked scan):

The caption reads:

Scott Schoenberger had a little time on his hands Friday and plenty of snow to create this snow sculpture of a shark. He even took time to don fishing gear for a picture.

It should come as absolutely no surprise to anyone that we know this guy.

Scott is famous around The Sandbar. He sang lead vocals on our original Hurricane song, a re-worded version of Copa Cabana that we recorded in a local studio. (Does anyone remember that version?) He's also a popular character on many of our St. Patrick's Day Parade floats. Many guys don't like to dance, but not Showtime. He lives up to his name and puts on a show.

Very creative use of the few inches of snow in his yard. Nice job, Showtime!

Bartender Nic in the News

Our Man on the Street Pat may have finally lost his throne. Bartender Nic appeared on the LJW's "On the Street" section yesterday. Apparently he was cornered while pumping gas.

If you haven't met Nic, come by on a Monday night. He's behind the bar from 5-9 on Margarita Monday.

The question:

"When you and your partner travel, who does the driving?"

Nic's answer (which may or may not get him in trouble with said partner):

“I do, all the time. She doesn’t like to drive. I don’t want
her driving.”

My question:

Does he not want her driving because she's a poor driver? Or because he's worried for her safety? Or is it because she doesn't like to drive, so he wants to make her happy?

I don't have an answer to that question. Ask him if you see him.

A Story About KU vs. K-State, or How Dave Got A Scar On His Forehead

Once upon a time, long before he mixed fruity concoctions or danced on bars or poured towering glasses of shots, Dave played basketball. His long, winding road through the land of college basketball eventually brought him to Lawrence and the Kansas Jayhawks.

(If you missed the fantastic story this fall about his path from backboards to surfboards, you can find it here.)

Anyway.

The KU-KSU Sunflower Showdown is always a heated rivalry, and Dave's playing years were no exception.

When his team traveled west to beat down the purple kitty-cats one year, Dave came home with more than a win. I've heard that Greg Gurley was talking about this on the radio yesterday, and it's been mentioned on the KUsports.com message boards, but I'm the only one with the exclusive story from Dave himself!

KU_KSU game kubball"I can't remember if it was '91 or '92, but I think it was my junior year ('91). We won the game, and afterwards the students started throwing crap at the court. I got hit on the forehead with something- to this day I don't know what it was. Maybe a quarter, a piece of ice…who knows.

Anyway, my forehead had a bleeding gash on it, and Coach Williams actually told the trainer not to fix it up right away. He wanted the media and everyone else to see the blood on my face so they wouldn't minimize the whole incident.

Of course the trainer fixed it before too long, but at least there were a few pictures of it, to prove I really did get hit.  There's still a small scar on my forehead from it.

I think someone else, maybe Rex Walters, got hit with something the next year."

This picture was taken shortly after the game before Dave's head was fixed. Doesn't he look young? (And skinny?!?)

The adorable little girl? His cousin Mariya, who has since graduated from KSU, is working on her master's degree and teaching, and recently got married. That makes Dave (and me) feel really old.

The KSU fans are still throwing things from the stands. Recently, their projectile of choice has been rubber chickens, which is particularly amusing to us at the Sandbar. If you've seen our hurricane videos, you know that rubber chickens play a prominent part.

Let's hope that everyone can stay classy today and that no one gets hurt.

If you're looking for a place to watch the game, we're giving away free chili dogs at both Sandbar Lawrence & Ottawa locations during the game. We may not have big-screen TV's, but our chili dogs can't be beat!

Rock Chalk Jayhawk!

Dave and the Downtown Lawrence Inc. Board

It seems like every time a member of the Sandbar family is in the news, another one or two follow right along.

Dave is starting his third year as a member of the Downtown Lawrence Board of Directors. The LJW had a little blurb about the new additions to the board, as well as the continuing members.

If you have ideas, suggestions, complaints, or whatever about Downtown Lawrence, feel free to send them his way. He can at least take your thoughts to the board.

It doesn't seem like it was January of 2008 when Dave started this foray into board membership. It's been an interesting two years for him, learning about the inner workings of an organization and getting up at the crack of dawn the morning after he's worked all night in order to make a 7:30 a.m. meeting. At least they're only once a month.

However, as I look back at the original post announcing his election to the board, I think we can all agree that he really hasn't changed that much.

Former Sandbar-tender Scotty and Brainville Trivia

Longtime Sandbar regular and once-upon-a-time bartender Scotty Mac was in the news yesterday, along with his lovely wife Jen. Read the LJW article, Trivial Matters: Live Games at Lawrence Bars, Restaurants Gain Momentum.

Scott created a quiz show game at Kaspar's Bar & Grill way back in 1999 with Peach's brother, Tom, who later bought the place and renamed it Conroy's Pub. (The article refers to him as "the godfather of Lawrence's trivia scene- I sense a new nickname.)

These days, Scott and Jen host Brainville Trivia at both Johnny's locations in Lawrence. On the second and fourth Wednesday of every month, they're at the original Johnny's, north of the river. Game starts at 7 p.m.

On the first and third Tuesday of the month, they host Brainville at Johnny's West, the new location out at 6th and Wakarusa. Game time is 8 p.m.

There's no limit on team size at either game, and they are free! Winners receive $25 cash.

If you love trivia and want to try out a live action game instead of Buzztime that we have available all the time, check out Brainville with Scotty & Jen! You might see some Sandbar folks in the crowd, too.

Congrats to Scott & Jen on a great article and publicity!
