A few weeks ago I wrote about the new Shark Bar in the Kansas City Power & Light District; last night I finally got to see it.
I went to Kansas City with a couple of former Sandbar staffers, Tyler and Erick, and while we were there we managed to run into even more Sandbar alumni.
Brit was a doorguy/bartender from many years ago. Once upon a time he tended bar on Saturday nights with Megan. They fell in love while sharing the space behind the bar and are now happily married, living in Kansas City with their two kids. I haven't seen Brit in several years. He was enjoying an after-work cocktail at an Irish pub.
Maynard– yet another former doorguy- managed to find us in the mob at KC Live. And then we ran into yet another old friend- Dave Kepsel (I'm sure I'm not spelling his last name right), who most of us haven't seen since he disappeared a few years ago. He's still tall.
It was a regular Sandbar reunion last night, and it wasn't even at The Sandbar. Feel free to share your favorite stories about these guys in the comments.

Brother Pants forwarded me a funny article from The Onion about Jimmy Buffett, so now I am sharing it all of you.
And speaking of secret lives, here's a good one for you from the alive-and-well rumor mill in Lawrence.
My good friend Becki called the other day to tell me that her mom had been visiting with a friend who informed her that she (or a friend of hers, I can't remember) was planning to go to Mexico to attend the wedding of the guy who owned the Sandbar. Becki's mom quickly informed her that she must be mistaken, because the guy who owns the Sandbar (actually, co-owns) had been happily married for quite some time and was definitely not traveling to Mexico to get married.
Her friend insisted that yes, it was the guy from the Sandbar- you know, the place that always has the floats in the St. Patrick's Day parade every year?
I told Dave that if he's planning to go to Mexico to get married that I at least better get to go along for the vacation.

A day late, but that's pretty common around here.
Coleen's birthday fell on Sunday, the day of our annual Sandbar beach party. We treated her to a very off-key version of the Happy Birthday song while enjoying red velvet birthday cake.
Happy Birthday Coleen! And if any of you are near the Sandbar this week, be sure to give her some birthday wishes. And tips.
Here's a birthday celebration picture from one of Coleen's past birthdays:

Regular reader and often sarcastic commenter Pattoo pointed out to me after the recent posts about Dave and Danny that he, too, has been the “man on the street” very recently.
Pat, however, got a much more serious question than the other two:
Do you think a peak in oil production will lead to a global energy crisis?
And the answer, according to the draft specialist:
I think it’s kind of a Y2K type of thing, where everyone gets all worked up about it, and then it never really materializes.
I’m glad I didn’t get stopped for that question, I would have sounded like an idiot.
Alright, are any of the rest of you in the paper for anything? Tell me now if you want to be featured here as well.
Edited: It was brought to my attention that I failed to link to the original article. Apparently you want to see Pat’s smiling face, so go here.

Danny apparently couldn’t stand all the attention that Dave got after appearing in one of last week’s “On the Street” questions from the award-winning LJW, so he had to go out and answer a question himself.
Question:
What is your opinion of low-carb dieting?
Danny’s Answer:
I think it doesn’t matter what diet you choose as long as you exercise enough. That’s my personal opinion.
Nice job Danny. We like to see our staff in the news.Though, the perennial commenters on the LJW have yet to point out Danny’s affiliation with The Sandbar.

What Sandbar staffer will be caught on the street next?

Today I got an email with the subject line of “look who’s in the news!” from my college buddy Brad. It contained a link to an article in the Lawrence Journal-World. Imagine my surprise when I clicked on the link and up popped a picture of my husband.
Apparently, Dave neglected to tell me that yesterday, after he got his snazzy new haircut, the LJW “On the Street” reporter stopped him for a quick interview. Knowing how controversial some of the questions they ask can be, and how the respondents subsequently get pummeled in the comment section online, Dave asked what the question was before he agreed to be quoted.
It was pretty harmless:
Do you prefer advance voting or voting on election day?
Dave’s picture was featured first along with his eloquent answer:
I like to vote on Election Day. I’m a hands-on type of guy. I like to go in, fill out the form, put it in the machine, and know my vote got counted.
You can see his picture and read the other answers here. You can also read the comments that readers have left, including one where the author is surprised that Dave was let out of the Sandbar to answer this question.
