Ken in the News

In all the holiday/traveling hubbub, I forgot to mention that another one of our bartenders was featured in the Lawrence Journal-World.

Ken has been at The Sandbar for many years now, I don’t even remember how long. He’s been a reliable fixture and can always be counted on to man the bar (both sides), the door, or flirt with the ladies.

Ken has a day job as a PE instructor at a local elementary school that is hoping to add new facilities in the coming years. Our boy Ken was quoted in the article, which you can find here.

We have all kinds of cool people at The Sandbar.

Sandbar Shot at Dolphin Stadium

Here’s a picture for the bulletin board at The Sandbar- Sandbar shirts at Dolphin Stadium for the Orange Bowl! Don’t let the t-shirts fool you- it was cold that night. The boys only had their jackets and sweatshirts off for this photo.

Don’t forget to take your Sandbar shirt with you next time you travel, you could be featured on our wall too.

Sandbartender in the News

Last Saturday, Downtown Lawrence played host to the 15th annual Old-Fashioned Christmas Parade. It’s a pretty cool tradition that brings lots of people downtown to see the horses and carriages.

One of our Friday after-work bartenders, Phil, is a board member for the parade group. Last week he participated in an online chat with the Lawrence Journal-World. Online readers were allowed to submit questions to the moderator, and Phil answered them online.

You can read the transcript here. Phil even managed to get in a hurricane reference towards the end of the chat. He must have had The Sandbar on the brain.

It’s always fun to see Sandbar folks in the news.

Actually, typing this post made me think of something. I’ve been asking questions of our current and former staff and publishing their answers here, in an effort to help the readers get to know them. But I came up with all the questions. Perhaps I should open it up to the readers? Tell you in advance who I’m profiling next, and let you submit questions for that person to answer? Something to ponder.

Where Are They Now: Angie

Angie manages to make it back to Lawrence every once in awhile for a visit.  We caught up with her recently and asked our questions so that you could learn all about her.

How long did you work at The Sandbar?
2 years, until June 2006.

Angie_and_ron How did you get the job? I was enjoying some cocktails one night and assisted a very inebriated, very large woman, who was grabbing bottles from behind the bar, out the door to avoid a police conflict.  Matt and Will thanked me with Coronas and Dave’s phone number. We met up the next week and the rest was history. I started on Monday’s and moved to Wednesday’s the next year.

How long were you a customer first?
I’ve loved the Sandbar since late 1999.

Other jobs you’ve had? I"m currently a social worker in Boulder, CO, but have dabbled in landscaping, banking, substitute teaching, baking, administratively assisting, and painting.

Favorite job besides The Sandbar?
Landscaping in sunny Colorado with a crew of 10 hilarious, non-English speaking Mexican men.

Favorite drink to drink?
Colorado Bulldog with beer following a close second.

Favorite drink to make? Colorado Bulldog- so pretty and foamy.

Most embarrassing moment at the bar? Every time I was up ON the bar.

Favorite memory at the bar? Every time I was up on the bar. Have to say, each night I worked or patroned, a good memory was made. What a place!

Favorite jukebox song?
"Use Me" by Bill Withers and "Southern Cross" by CSNY.

Song you never want to hear again?
"Margaritaville."  Sorry!

Favorite bar dancing song? "Car Wash."

Favorite Sandbar float? Grease.

Longest you’ve waited in line?
40 minutes.

Hobbies? I’m usually up for anything, but I consistently enjoy Happy Hour. Is that a hobby?

Favorite Quote?
"Be glad of life because it gives you the chance to love and to work and to play and to look up at the stars."  Henry Van Dyke.

Favorite music? reggae, folk, alternative.

Favorite ice cream? soft serve from Dairy Queen.Mandy_angie_heather2

Buffett in Hawaii

We were surprised by this email last month:

My wife and I were in Hawaii last week to see Jimmy Buffett and the Coral
Reefers. The show was fantastic. What could be better? Well, Jan Colley of
Spring Valley Lake, California will tell you meeting the surfers on the
beach was pretty cool, too. Hang Loose Dude.  Chuck

He doesn’t look as cranky as the media makes him out to be, does he?

Congratulations to Rheva

Our good friend and former bartender Rheva has retired from her day job.

Getdowntown015Rheva worked a shift behind the bar several years ago.  Anytime I can’t remember exactly when someone worked, it becomes "several years ago."  After awhile all the years kind of run together.  She also worked at The Lodge of Baldwin City in their bar for quite some time.  For those of you unfamiliar with this little motel, it’s one of Peach and Ted’s other ventures.

Rheva can always be counted on for a good time.  She can party longer than I can, for that matter.  She and her partner Dave host fun gatherings at their pool every summer and their group of friends range from her granddaughter’s age to retirement age.  When we asked her what she’s going to do now that she’s retired, she laughed and said "Play!"  She already did plenty of that, but hopefully we’ll see her and Dave at the bar more often now that a pesky job isn’t taking up her time.

Oh, and she won a wet t-shirt contest in Cancun one time.

Retirement festivities are going on at The Sandbar as I write.  A quick glance at the webcam shows a full house.  It should be a long, fun night.
