Last year, we didn't find out about Repeal Day until after it had happened. Yes, we can turn any holiday into a drinking holiday, but this is one of the few holidays to actually celebrate the ability to have a drink.
Repeal Day is tomorrow, December 5. What is it? Well, on this day in 1933, Utah (of all states) was the final state needed for a three quarters majority to ratify the 21st amendment- more commonly known as the amendment which repealed Prohibition and restored your right to have a drink.
Visit the official website for more information about this holiday. They give three very good reasons to celebrate:
- It's the perfect time of year.
- You have the constitutional ability to do so.
- It's easy! (my favorite reason)
So, stop by The Sandbar tomorrow and have a glass of wine or a Bahama Mama or your favorite beer, just because you can. As always, please be responsible.

In case you've been out of touch with popular culture, today is International Talk Like A Pirate Day.
You can read all about how this glorious holiday began on the official website.
We don't have any cute bendy pirate men to decorate your drinks like we did last year, but that doesn't mean you can't celebrate at The Sandbar. We still have lots of other trinkets and toys to entertain our patrons.
So if you don't have any other plans tonight, come on down to The Sandbar tonight and bring your best "ARRRR" along with you. And if you dress like a pirate, you don't have to pay the cover charge tonight!

We didn’t intend to have a Martin Luther King Day celebration. Not that we were opposed to it, it’s just not generally at the top of the list for holidays that involve going to a bar. This year, however, was different.
Around 2:30 today- before our advertised opening time of 3 p.m.- a group of six or seven twenty-somethings arrived. They were pretty excited and hyper. Apparently they get together every year on this day off from work to hit the bars. They bought a hurricane. It was perhaps the earliest time we’ve run the hurricane in all it’s years of existence. One of the girls fell off her chair. They took pictures and had a few shots. They also bought lots of merchandise, like hats and koozies.
By 5 p.m. we actually had a pretty decent crowd in the bar. A few regulars, and the original group was still living it up in the back of the bar. Who would have thought that a Monday afternoon could actually be busy and fun?
Maybe we should start promoting The Sandbar as the place to be on federal holidays.

I can’t believe we missed a real drinking holiday. There is actually a holiday, Repeal Day, that celebrates the day our grandparents (or great-grandparents for some of us) were given the green light to start drinking alcohol.
On December 5, 1933, Utah became the final state needed to have the required three-quarters majority of the states to ratify the 21st amendment to the United States Constitution and repeal Prohibition. I know, you probably never thought you would get a history lesson from The Sandbar, but this, my friends, is intrinsic to the very existence of your favorite bar and mine. Therefore, it is worthy of this blog.
The "official" Repeal Day website lists several reasons why Americans (of legal drinking age of course) should partake in this event. They’re pretty darn good reasons, so here they are.
- It’s the perfect time of year. We’ve just escaped the first family-centric holiday of the season, Thanksgiving, hopefully with sanity still intact. Some people are looking for a way to numb the memory of too much turkey (the food or the family kind). Others may have decided that since they blew their diets, they might as well go out drinking, because what’s a few more pounds after all the pie they ate. Still others are preparing for whichever December family religious holiday they may celebrate. So, what better reason to grab a few friends and hit the town on Repeal Day?
- Our Constitution allows it. Seriously, what other holiday actually celebrates a law that guarantees our rights? And all Americans can claim this holiday, because it’s written in our Constitution. Although, we think that every single American should also celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, just because it’s fun.
- It’s easy. You don’t have to do a single thing but take a drink (or twelve) of alcohol. You can be alone, though we recommend celebrating with friends. You don’t have to come up with a creative costume. (Although we encourage that as well). And you don’t have to be a raving drunk to appreciate what the 21st amendment did for you. In fact, we’d much rather that you not be an idiot. Enjoy a classy glass of wine if you want. Or come by for a Bahama Mama.
So, here’s your 364-days-ahead-of-time warning: don’t forget Repeal Day next year. I promise, neither will we.

Aaarrrrr! We almost forgot about this!
Tomorrow, September 19, is International Talk Like A Pirate Day! Thanks to Caroline for sending along a friendly reminder.
You can read the great story of how this holiday got started here. It truly is funny and these guys sound like people who would hang out at The Sandbar.
We encourage all of you out there to talk like a pirate tomorrow. It’s not hard- just throw in a few "arrrr’s" and you’re good. We dare you to answer your phone like that all day long. And in honor of the holiday, we have fun new Bahama Mama toys in stock- bendable pirate guys.

What a crazy weekend.
Typically, Sunday nights are pretty slow. People are relaxing and getting ready to start a new week of work, or school, or whatever it is they do. It’s not generally a big party night out on the town. But if there’s a Monday holiday, then wow. Sunday nights suddenly become crazier and busier than one of the other weekend nights.
Last night was no exception. At 10 p.m. there were about fifteen people there, hanging out and having some drinks. Dave had wisely planned ahead and staffed two people on the late shift instead of the usual one, and sure enough by 10:30 the place was packed to capacity. All it takes is one big group to fill up our wee place.
And what a fun crowd. People were singing and dancing and laughing. Two hurricanes were purchased and no one had to be convinced to dance on the bar or the benches or the floor. The jukebox provided an unusually good selection of music, too- the patrons last night had good taste.
The Sandbar made some new friends last night. A couple of folks from Canada were in town, and they had actually heard of the hurricane from some friends who live elsewhere in Kansas. They came to the bar just to see it. All the way from Canada! Can you believe word of the hurricane has traveled that far? And our new friends from Austin, TX- Phil and Kristin- had lots of fun with shots and the shotski. They don’t have anything quite like The Sandbar in Austin. Probably in all of Texas, for that matter.
It wasn’t all new people, we saw some old familiar faces too. Buzz was back visiting from Colorado- he was a regular many years ago. And of course the usual assortment of off-the-clock staff and a variety of regulars were hanging around too. It was one of those nights where you might think you’re going to head home early but before you know it, it’s 2 a.m. and time to go and you had a blast.
