Goodbye 2009, hello 2010! All of us at The Sandbar wish you a wonderful new year!
Tonight, the last night of 2009, features not only a full moon but also a blue moon. What's a blue moon? Well, according to my fine sources (Wikipedia!):
A blue moon is a full moon
that is not timed to the regular monthly pattern. Most years have
twelve full moons which occur approximately monthly, but in addition to
those twelve full lunar cycles, each solar calendar year contains an
excess of roughly eleven days compared to the lunar year. The extra
days accumulate, so that every two or three years (7 times in the
19-year Metonic cycle),
there is an extra full moon. The extra moon is called a "blue moon."
Different definitions place the "extra" moon at different times.
What does this mean, really? Well, the moon won't be blue. It's just a second full moon in December. (Great. Please don't tell Dave this. He already believes that full moons bring out the crazies, and he might hide in the basement if he knows it's another full moon tonight.)
According to CNN, the last time a blue moon happened on New Year's Eve was 1990. It's pretty cool that it's happening at the end of a decade this time.

Since it's Thursday, we'll still be running our normal "Tropical Thursday" special, but with a slight change. The special includes all of our specialty tropical drinks (minus the Shark Attack, sorry!), and tonight will also include Trashcan Punch.

Also tonight, we will have $2 Blue Moon shots, in honor of tonight's blue moon.

Tropical Thursdays at The Sandbar is about to get a little more fun for the trivia buffs out there!
We've had Buzztime play-along trivia for awhile now, and there's a steady group of players on Thursday nights. Now, in addition to playing others around the world, we're turning it into a competition between the Lawrence and Ottawa Sandbars!
Every Thursday night, starting this week, from 6 to 8 pm, come in and grab a playmaker. At 8 pm, the player with the highest score at each location wins a free Sandbar t-shirt.
But wait, there's more!
Even if you aren't the player with the highest score, you can still win a prize. The players at the Sandbar with the higher score at 8 pm- as long as the location is also in the Top 50 nationwide- will also win a round of drinks, courtesy of the Sandbar staff! (Note: you have to be playing trivia in order to be included.)
It might sound lofty to place in the Top 50 nationwide, but it's not really that hard. Ottawa is frequently in the Top 10, so it sounds like Lawrence has some catching up to do.
So, bring your friends and come play some trivia with us on Thursdays!

Now this is the new special we've been really excited to announce!
You've known and loved Bahama Mama night for quite some time. $2 Bahama Mama refills every Thursday, with your special Sandbar pint glass. You can even bring the same glass back every week…we know times are tough right now!
That's not changing…you can still get your Bahama Mama fix cheap on Thursdays. But- we are adding drinks to this deal!

We are working with our glassware provider, the wonderful Grandstand Sportswear and Glassware, to come up with a new design for the glasses to replace the current "Bahama Mama Night" design. Be sure to hang on to your old glasses, they might become collector's items! And don't worry, you can still bring the old glasses back on Thursdays for your refills.

Yesterday I gave you a preview of our new specials for every day of the week.
Our new Wednesday special is $2 well drinks. It's not totally new, we've been phasing this one in over the last few weeks, as we have desperately tried to get you to drink the last of the cans we had in stock.
Wednesdays have seen lots of changes as we've tried to hit on the right combination for the night. It's the middle of the week, people are ready for the weekend, but it's still kind of a strange night to go out. Sometimes it's busy, sometimes not so much.
We tried to do "Lei Night" on Wednesdays, a couple different times, and last time we even tried to introduce a special t-shirt that you could only get if you collected a certain number of lei's. But it just never really took off- maybe nobody else thought it was a fun idea.
And, we've focused a lot on beer specials in the last few years, so we thought maybe it was time to give you liquor drinkers a better deal.
So, the free chips and salsa have now moved to Margarita Mondays, and the $2 cans are no more. But, come in tomorrow for $2 wells!

The Sandbar is very excited to announce new specials!
Don't worry, we aren't changing Tuesdays. We're adding some things and switching some others around, though, in an effort to appeal to more of our customers.
Kick off your week with a visit to The Sandbar today and enjoy Margarita Mondays: $2 margaritas, free chips and salsa from La Familia, and Buzztime Trivia!

Last night I mentioned that we added a new brew to the tap lineup: Tallgrass Winter Stout.
Tallgrass Brewing Company is a microbrewery located just down the interstate in Manhattan, KS, but don't hold that against them. It was founded in 2007 by Jeff and Tricia Gill.
The Sandbar has featured Tallgrass before and it was a hit. Currently, we are one of the lucky few who carry their new seasonal brew, Winter Stout. According to their website, it seems that the only other place in town you can get it is Old Chicago. The feedback on the new beer has been good, so in October 2009 it will become a regular seasonal.
Take a look around their website- you can read about how the brewery was founded, ask a homebrewing question, or find out where to buy Tallgrass for yourself. You can even make the drive west to take a tour of the brewery. That would be a fun road trip.
