Happy Mardi Gras!

It's Mardi Gras! Isn't it great that this day always coincides with our most-loved special, the famous $1.50 anything? (If you remember the good old days of dollar anything Tuesday's, well, you've been around a long time.)

Order your favorite drink for only a buck fifty. Of course there are a few exceptions- there's always fine print in life. Premiums are $2, as are Bahama Mama's and our other tropical drinks.

Stop by The Sandbar tonight to celebrate with us. We always have lots of beads and tonight is no exception. And you don't even have to do anything to get beads here- we'll give them to you with your drink.

A $3 cover charge starts at 8 p.m.

And, we have a brand new beer on tap. Dave added Tallgrass Winter Stout. Check it out and let us know what you think!

If you can't get out of the house to celebrate Fat Tuesday, you can do it online. If you're a member of Facebook, you can use our popular "My Sandbar" application to send virtual beads to all your friends.

Thursday Dinner and a Movie

I should have posted this last night so you would have known about it for today, but at least it's still the beginning of the month.

During the month of February, to celebrate the grand opening of the Sandbar Sub Shop in Ottawa, every Thursday night is Dinner-and-a-Movie night!

All you have to do is stop by either the original Sandbar in Ottawa, or the new Sandbar Subs, on Thursdays during February and enjoy some great food. For each order that is $10 or more, you'll receive a free movie ticket for that night's show at the Crystal Plaza Movie Theater, also located in downtown Ottawa.

It's a great deal, considering you could pay $10 for just a movie ticket in some places. I did last summer, and the movie wasn't even that great. This way, you get a full meal out of it too!

Let's schedule a road trip from Sandbar Lawrence down to Ottawa- we'll head down in the early evening, grab some dinner at the Sub Shop, play arcade games, and then head over to The Sandbar for adult beverages. If you're interested in tagging along, leave us a comment. We'll set something up.

A Few New Drinks

The Sandbar has a few new drinks to satisfy your thirst, and Dave said it's finally a lineup he likes.

Hava Lava

This is a fruit-punchy type of drink that looks like flaming lava, only it's served ice cold. We're looking for a fun volcano-themed toy to add to this drink but for now, you get whatever we happen to have in stock.

Pink Flamingo

This one isn't new, but it's been tweaked. Dave's mom served us a fun pink drink at Christmas that she called the Pink Panty Pull-down (I have no idea where that name came from, so don't even ask- although this post will probably get spammed until the next century for mentioning the p-word).  Instead of adding a new drink, we just replaced the previous Pink Flamingo recipe with this one. Sorry, Maynards.

Mango-Rita

A  new margarita in honor of owner/founder Peach, whose real name is Rita. She probably wouldn't want that revealed, but it fits the drink. Just what it sounds like, a mango flavored margarita.

Pina Colada

The last new drink is our only frozen drink, replacing the frozen Hurricanes we've had for awhile. It's your typical pina colada and it's delicious. It even has real banana in it. Just kidding, it's creme de banana liqueur, but you'd never know it.

Next time you're in the bar, step out of your comfort zone and try one of the new drinks!

Odell IPA, Now on Tap

You might notice a new elephant peeking out from the row of tap handles at The Sandbar.

We recently replaced New Belgium's seasonal Skinny Dip brew with Odell Brewing Company's IPA. It's won some stuff, and our former staffer Matt recommended it, so now it's on tap.

The company's website says it is a "sustainable, green micro-brewery in Fort Collins, Colorado, with a tap room for beer tasting; brewing handcrafted and small batch beers that include pale ales, stouts, pilsners and porters."  It seems like a cool company, and you can read about their history here.

Stop by and enjoy one, and let us know what you think of it.

Jello-Fish

Recently, Dave was inspired by our good friend John (from The Hawk) to try something new- jello shots. John had whipped up a batch of them for a day on the lake, and after he explained to Dave just how easy they were to make (and that they could be created at the bar and not in our kitchen), Dave was sold.

Labor Day weekend was a test run for this new idea. We bought massive quantities of jello at Dillon's and experimented with different flavors of jello and liquor. We made enough for a birthday party, the football game tailgate, a pool party, and a lake party- and they were a hit at each event.

Dave found perfectly sized plastic cups, with lids, and made his first batch at the bar last night. I like to think these might have cheered up the crowd a little bit after the shocking last minute loss in the KU football game. We even have whipped cream to add on top. Stop by some night to check out our new jello-fish shots and let us know your favorite flavors.

Landshark Lager is Here!

Landsharklager_3 A little over a year ago, we told you about Jimmy Buffett’s new brew, Landshark Lager. Well, it’s finally made it’s debut at The Sandbar!

Join us tonight for Tuesday night "$1.50 almost anything" specials, and try out this new beer for yourself. The good folks from our local Budweiser distributor, O’Malley Beverage, will be on hand with fun promotions (which usually means free stuff) and people to help spread the word about Landshark Lager.

Landshark Lager is considered a "premium" beer at our establishment, so it’s actually $2.00 tonight instead of a buck, but don’t let that stop you. It’s still pretty cheap.

And if you’re wondering where those Valentine love-at-the-Sandbar stories are that I promised last week, come back tomorrow. I actually do have a story to tell, with pictures, thanks to a reader who actually paid attention to my request. For the rest of you, send me your story or I’ll tell Dave to cut you off.
