Staff Profile: Danny

Since I publicly committed to blogging daily here during January, and since I've kind of run out of things to write about (for now), I put out a plea to the staff. I sent them a list of random questions and begged them to answer them so I could profile them here.

Danny was the first (and so far the only) one to answer me.

Way back in 2007, we profiled Danny for the first time. A lot of things change in three years…and some things don't.

How long you have you worked here? Since May 2005

What's your favorite drink to drink? Jameson+rocks

What's your favorite drink to make?  I think I make a mean margarita. (He does. And I would know.)

Most unusual drink request?  Calimocho…red wine and cola equal parts…shockingly enough I already knew how to make it because of a guy I met in the climbing club at KU who was from Spain.  The lady that ordered it was equally shocked that I didn't need any clarification.

Favorite memory at the bar:  I worked a SLOW Tuesday and Bill Self made an appearance.  While he was there he bought 2 bottles of Miller Lite and tipped me $20 for each one.  If only everyone tipped that way!

Tell us a funny story from the bar: Sandbar Christmas party 2009…Hayley gave me a wedgie, and when I feigned that I was going to retaliate, she yelled for help…Joe, who was behind the bar, quickly responded by spraying me in the face…..with Sprite.  I was still sticky when I woke up the next morning.  Good times.

Other things Danny does when not working at the Sandbar:  Nursing school, running, fundraising like a bat out of hell for MS (http://main.nationalmssociety.org/site/TR?px=3998975&fr_id=16072&pg=personal), pretend musician for $ellout!

What's your favorite jukebox song? Van Morrison – Cleanin' Windows

What's the song you never want to hear again?  Disney, Save a Horse…

Thanks Danny! And here's a picture from the aforementioned 2009 Christmas party:

Sandbar Resolutions

Happy 2011! We're excited about the new year and all the things we want to do. Here's just a few things on our radar. We'll call them resolutions, but they're really just some things on our list that we want to accomplish.

1. Rebuild the hurricane machine

  • The hurricane has been running since 2002, can you believe it? And it's time to upgrade our setup. In fact, we have to- we have a new video to add, but our current system can't quite handle it.
  • Of course, Dave also wants to add more- more wind, more lightning, more everything.

2. A new hurricane video

  • We have one new video to add, but it's really not totally new. It's recycled footage from some older videos, which means it will be new to most of you.
  • You might remember last August when we had a hurricane video contest. Our winner, Kim, has been patiently waiting for months for her video clip to debut, and we want to make her a star as soon as possible. Don't worry, we'll get a brand new video done soon.

3. The biggest, most over-the-top St. Patrick's Day float ever

  • You all know we try to outdo ourselves every year on St. Patrick's Day. This year will be no exception. It will be hard to top last year's castle, but not impossible.

4. Find something fun to do with our upstairs space

  • We have a beach upstairs, but it doesn't get much use. We don't have many options; the upstairs space doesn't increase our capacity and we're still limited to 49 people according to fire code. But surely there's something we can do up there that would be fun. Suggestions welcome!

There's a few of our goals for 2011. I'm sure we'll have many, many more.

What goals or resolutions do you have for the new year? We'd love to hear them! Leave us a comment, and in a few days we'll put together a list for the blog.

Sandbar Tee in Hollywood

Alright, we're going to attempt this blogging-every-day thing again. It happened in November, during National Blog Posting Month. Apparently after that effort got started several years ago, lots of people wanted to do it every month, so now it's become a thing every month with a theme. January's theme is "friends."

So, in the spirit of friends, here's another picture of well-traveled Sandbar tees, this time in the celebrity mecca of Hollywood!

I traveled to L.A. a few months ago for the wedding of a college friend and former Sandbar regular, along with a group of girls who still occasionally frequent the bar. Of course, Becki and I took our Sandbar shirts along.

This spot at the Griffith Park Observatory  was the closest we could get to the Hollywood sign- I'm sure there are better photo ops, but our schedule didn't allow us to spend much time on this. The Hollywood sign really is back there- I circled it.

Got a picture somewhere outside of Lawrence with your Sandbar tee? Send it to us!

Happy 2011!

Welcome to 2011, everybody! All of us at the Sandbar hope you had a great celebration last night, whether you stayed home, went out or partied with us.

Our wig party was a smashing success! What started out as an idea Dave borrowed from the band Lucero (he saw a reference to a wig party on one of their videos) turned into a fun party with lots of participation.

The bar's been busy all week (and we thank you for that!) and last night was no exception. By 9 p.m. the bar was full of New Year's revelers, and the local Channel 6 video reporter showed up too. There were also some Channel 6 staffers at the party…with wigs…but they successfully avoided my camera. We later watched ourselves on the Channel 6 newscast (I haven't been able to find a link to the video online to share.)

Here's a few pictures:

We had an early hurricane featuring the 21st birthday girl, Allie (or it might have been Hallie, sorry!).

You can see a few wigs in the crowd…

A lot of our staff members who weren't on the clock still came to the party last night, and surprisingly many of them were NOT wearing wigs. But our customers made up for their lack of costume- thanks to everyone who joined our fun and sported a wig!

We didn't take very many pictures last night, but you can see them on our Facebook page or Flickr page. If you have any to share we'd love to see them!

Men Behind the Bar, Part Two

Some of the pictures from Dave's infamous Christmas gift made an appearance yesterday. Today, after a few more of the boys granted permission for their pictures to be posted here, I bring you a few more.

January-Joe

January: Joe, looking sharp with all his classy accessories, including the Rolex.

May-Danny

May: Danny, looking all hot and sweaty on a trail run.

August-Fyler

August: Fyler. This might be the month where the calendar started to go downhill.

November-Frank

November: Frank. Everyone utters a collective "Whoa, Frank!" when they flip to this page.  He's our resident tech expert/website host/Guinness drinker.

There's obviously a few more pictures in the calendar. And they're certainly not more outrageous than these, but the boys haven't given permission for them to be posted online. If they do, I'll post them.

So, we're thinking of doing something like this every year now. Danny suggested a fundraising calendar. What do you think? Would you buy one? Would you prefer that the ladies be included? Let us know!
