This postcard showed up the other day at the bar, addressed to Dave and Peach.
We checked out Lynn's website, and there's a whole slew of paintings like this that feature various downtown shops and scenes. They're pretty cool. Stop by Milton's to check them out.
We love the one on the postcard, especially since Dave's silly yellow scooter is parked in front of the building. Nice job, Lynn!
Last Saturday, I stopped by the bar for a quick errand. A group of young people were sitting at the bar with drinks, talking to Coleen and fiddling with their phones. I heard one of the guys telling Coleen that he was checking in on Foursquare and that he was trying to become "mayor."
I was intrigued, because I haven't overheard customers talking about "checking in" and "foursquare" before. I asked him if he'd earned jukebox credits yet (a free perk after checking in three times between 5-9 p.m.) and he said he thought so.
The young man then said, "I think you should get a free drink or shot for being mayor!"
Unfortunately, many people don't understand that we can't do things like that because of Kansas liquor laws. We can't give away alcohol, and we can't even discount it. A drink has to be the same price, for everyone, all day. Thus, no happy hours.
We're thinking of changing our Foursquare special soon. Any suggestions? Legal ones only, please.
Oh, and if you want to knock off Caroline as the mayor, you're going to have to keep checking in.
Patrick, Peach's brother and video camera operator extraordinaire, filmed loads of video at our 21st birthday block party last August. He recently edited and uploaded some of the video to YouTube, and we were excited to see it for the first time!
You can see some of Stomper's set here, and Katlyn Conroy and the Wild and Woolly are captured on video here. Katlyn is Patrick's daughter.
Everyone loves Captain Jack Sparrow, and we love bringing him back every year. He helped us welcome the huge crowd. The last half of the video below are random shots Patrick filmed, some from the roof of the bar.
Peach, Dave and the Sandbar dancing girls took the stage to perform the perennial Sandbar favorite, "Car Wash," and the Sandbar song. I'm sure we all have funny looks on our faces- the stage lights were blinding us, so we couldn't see anything in front of the stage. Last year, we could actually see the crowd and people's faces; this year was a little more awkward.
The fifth video Patrick uploaded is a three minute film of the headlining band, Mark Valentine and the Ones. you can check it out here.
The Lawrence Journal-World featured an article the other day about Lawrence businesses expanding outside of Lawrence. Many prominent businesses were profiled, like Johnny’s, Quinton’s and and Ingredient, who have all taken their concept and opened additional restaurants in Kansas City and other places.
We were surprised to see our name mentioned in the article, too! A long time ago, we talked about opening more Sandbars outside of Lawrence. Peach opened one in Ottawa, but then decided to go in a different direction and open sandwich shops instead, calling them Sandbar Sub Shop.
Since she opened the first one several years ago, she’s begun a partnership with the folks at Zarco66 that has included opening Sub Shops inside their gas stations. So far, two franchise locations are open- one in Lawrence on East 23rd Street and the other in Ottawa- and a third one is set to open on 6th Street in Lawrence soon.
It’s fun and exciting to expand a business and take it in a different direction! But don’t worry, we aren’t changing anything about the original Sandbar in downtown Lawrence. Except maybe adding more stuff to our walls.
Our ginormous fish tank is a big attraction. Often, people who are walking by the bar in the middle of the day will see it and come in so their kids can check out the fish. People name the fish, talk to them and sit and watch them for hours.
Lots of people like to take pictures of the fish. It's hard to get a good one- it's almost like they know you're trying, so they hide. Or they move around so fast you can't get a decent shot.
