Last week the Sandbar Sub Shop in downtown Ottawa got a facelift! Or, should we say, a floorlift…
You might recall that several years ago we replaced the floor in the women's bathroom at the Sandbar in Lawrence. Brand new wood-like vinyl flooring took the place of the worn-out laminate that had been there forever. The "wood" floor held up so well that Peach decided to put it in the Sub Shop.
Dave, Ted and our friend/contractor Jeff worked for several hours in the Sub Shop, with some help from Peach and her brother Patrick. They replaced the floor throughout the entire Sub Shop with vinyl wood plank flooring, and it looks fantastic. Dave said it didn't take nearly as long to install as they thought it would, either.
Check it out:
They also built a bench along the south wall of the shop (where Dave's sitting in the picture!). It's similar to the benches along the walls of the Sandbar. It allow for a little more seating in the shop.
If you haven't been to the Sandbar Sub Shop, it's worth the drive to Ottawa. And next month, we're opening one in Lawrence! Peach has partnered with Scott from Zarco66, and he's opening Sandbar Sub Shops in his gas station. He's got one up and running in Ottawa already, and the 23rd Street station is next on the list.
If you aren't already on our email list, join it here to get updates on the new Sub Shop and other fun stuff.
Last month our sister Sandbar in Ottawa featured live music on the beach. Well, the beach volleyball court behind the building, which is the closest thing to a beach around here (unless you count our fake beach upstairs).
The Barnyard Boys, a local band, performed that night- and a few weeks later a video popped up on YouTube of their performance. If you like bluegrass music, you'll love the Barnyard Boys.
It doesn't look like their website has been updated for awhile, so I can't tell you when they're playing again, but if we find out we'll let you know.
In honor of the rainy weather we've had all week and the hot, sunny temperatures expected for the weekend, we bring you one of the highlights of summertime beer-drinking: a patio.
If you haven't been to the Sandbar in Ottawa, you're missing out. Sure, the bar was created in an old Taco Bell building, but after seven years, you'd never know it.
One of the great things about our sister location is the fabulous patio out front. It's gone through a lot of changes since the bar opened, and it was significantly improved once the smoking ban in Ottawa was passed and the smokers needed a fun place to go.
And this is the best kind of patio, because it's all-weather; it's covered and semi-enclosed to help block the wind and cold, and there's lots of tables and chairs. And a foosball table! Our signature decor hangs all over the walls, too.
Check it out sometime. Sometime this summer we'll schedule a volleyball game on the beach in Ottawa, and take a bunch of you down there for drinks on the patio.
Our first franchise location of the Sandbar Sub Shop is up and running, and it looks fabulous!
The new Sandbar Sub Shop is located inside the Zarco66 station in Ottawa, Kansas, at 2518 East Logan. It's near the intersection of I-35 and 68 Highway. The station features gasoline and diesel fuel, a touch free car wash, and a variety of great food inside. We're excited that Sandbar Subs are now available there, too!
Peach helped out with the decor, and there's lots of tin-roof awnings, bright colors, surfboards, and tropical accents. The sandwiches are the same ones already served at our original location in downtown Ottawa. The staff is outfitted in crazy Hawaiian t-shirts.
The Zarco66 stations will become known as the Zarco Oasis- a place where you can fill up, stock up, and eat great food, all in a relaxing tropical atmosphere. My favorite part? The Sandbar Song playing over the speakers at the gas pumps.
The next Zarco66 station slated for a Sandbar Sub Shop is the one on East 23rd Street in Lawrence- current plans are to have it open within the next six weeks.
Like volleyball? The Sandbar in Ottawa has two great sand volleyball courts behind the bar, and we're having a co-ed sand volleyball tournament this weekend!
After the volleyball games, stick around for live music with Frankie Diamond starting at 8 pm! Great food, great drinks, great friends- and great music!
